Ready Classroom Project Released
Thank you to the participants that came out to the D.C. Family Education Expo and joined DC VOICE for our bre akfast Ready Classrooms Project Town Hall! We were able to present findings from over 100 teacher interviews we conducted over the spring, as community members discussed their reactions and recommendations to this
data to address education reform in the District.
Jim Shelton, Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education, kicked off the Ready Classrooms Project Town Hall by telling community members, "It's time to get to work!" DC VOICE could not agree more. Click these links to download a copy of the town hall meeting guide or the 16-page report. |
Recent Budget Cuts Impact DC VOICE
Yesterday, nearly a dozen community groups joined at the Wilson Building to protest recent council decisions that have already begun to close the doors of some local non-profits and significantly reduce the service delivery of others (See DC Wire Story Here). This comes after council indiscriminately eliminated all city grants from the Mayor's Budget following reports of misappropiation by some council members.
DC VOICE is not immune to the impact of such decisions. Recent cuts from both the Council for the District of Columbia and the Collaborative for Education Organizing of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region has resulted in a 30% cut of our overall 09-10 budget in just the last 50 days.
Ways that DC VOICE budget cuts will likely impact the community:
-
Fewer town hall meetings this school year to present and discuss relevant education data in various parts of the city
-
Elimination of our Youth Leadership Development program;
-
Inability to continue to expand the Ready Classrooms and Ready Charter Projects which were piloted for the first time in 2009.
"Without community organization services and continued committment to strategies of prevention and intervention, how will we stop the rise of violence and poverty in our Nation's capital?" the coalition, Citizens United, asked in statement. "The safety nets are gone for a lot of these disadvantaged programs," said Brenda Jones of the Parklands Community Center, who said her city funding has dropped from $200,000 annually to zero.
Community leaders are planning a follow up protest scheduled for next week when City Council will take a record-breaking fourth vote on the 2009-2010 city budget. Please e-mail skashim@dcvoice.org if you are interested in learning more. |

State Board President Circulates Petition Urging Veto Override
A petition is circulating the District in order to gain support of an Independent State Board of Education. Of the District's $10 billion budget, the D.C. Board of Education is only allotted a small portion, which is also controlled by the Mayor. In 2009, the Mayor removed Board staff positions, without notification, in order to cut the Board's budget by 50% for the=2 0next fiscal year.
The purpose of an independent State Board is that it is the "legal entity that sets and oversees learning standards and academic achievement for all children in DC Public Schools and DC public charter schools...without political interference and partisanship."
An independent State Board of Education is imperative in order to continue necessary programs.
