ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

 

Essay Contest Rules

 

  1. Contestants must compose an original essay.  A teacher or parent may review the essay and give suggestions but all work must be the student’s.  Any quotations or use of material from copyrighted source must be properly documented in the essay and bibliography.

 

  1. The contest is open to all High School students in the D.C. Public Schools. 

 

3.  Participants must write on one of the following contest topics. 

 

    1. Things I would do to Improve my Community

    2. A Greener District of Columbia

    3. What I would do if I Were the Attorney General for the District of Columbia

    4. What I Would do if I Were the Chancellor

    5. What I Would do if I Were the Mayor  

    6. What I Would do if I Were the Chief of Police

    7. What I Would do for the District of Columbia if I were the President of the U.S. or the First Lady

    8. What I Would do to Improve Transportation in the District of Columbia

 

4.  The first page of the essay should contain the student’s name, address, phone number and date of birth

 

5.  Essays must be typewritten, double spaced, contain no more than 500 words and stapled on the top left-hand corner. 

 

6.  Essays will be read and judged by the District of Columbia Attorney General on organization, neatness, adherence to contest rules, grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and style.  

 

7.  Essays must be signed by one parent to indicate parent’s consent for his/her child to participate in contest.

8.  Essays must be submitted by Microsoft word attachment to Sammie.Jenkins@dc.gov.       on or before February 11, 2010.

 

Awards

 

First Place:           Meet the Attorney General for the District of Columbia or the Chief of Police. 

            $300.00 gift card

           

Second Place:        $200.00 gift card

                                     

 

      Third Place:          $100.00 gift card
