Greening the community has been a topic lately on the Eckington List Serv. A Few blogs back i posted info on ways residents can do there part in adding more green space to the community through rebates from DDOE and Casey Trees. Since then I have been in contact with the good folks at Casey to have a inventory done on the plantable space within the community. This would give us an idea of what recommendations to present to government agencies for tree planting in public space. The inventory also gives us the opportunity to hold a Casey Trees community tree planting where Casey would provide the trees, education and tools needed to plant a minimum of 10 trees in the community.
Here are a few comments from the list serv feel free to post comments and suggestions.
The inventory that I'm planing on doing with Casey would give the neighborhood an idea of what space is plantable and what space needs the most attention. After the survey is complete we can forward the findings to UFA to recommend specific street tree plots for planting. I must say UFA has done a great job as of late with marking trees for removal, removing and trenching out new spots through out the neighborhood.
However because of the large amount of impervious space in the community the greatest opportunity for
tree planting is on private property. As far as stewardship of existing trees go's there are a few programs that the city has but we as a community should find solutions of our own.

It would be good to come up with some type of master "
greening" plan and identify areas that are in dire need through some type of needs assessment; I feel this would be a great place to start. We also need to examine what other organizations and/or existing government agencies are charged with planting and removing trees as well as cleaning up vacant land or supplying mulch; this will decrease possible replication and evenly applies existing resources. Thank you for your leadership in this area, it has been a boon to the community. Looking forward. Commish Wright.

Also in addition to this I'm looking into partnering with Casey Trees to conduct a inventory of the plantable space in Eckington. This will help the neighborhood to better identify areas in the most need for green cover addition. Casey Trees has done inventories in other neighborhoods such as Crestwood, Dupont Circle and would defiantly be useful in this community, as we look to add to our green space.
If your interested in working with me on this or have other suggestions feel free to email me of list.

City Year, Casey Tree and Emery students plant trees
Eckington Civic Association
2010 Green Dream
The ECA is adopting a Green mission statement and approach to bring neighbors together for "hands-on" community building. Starting in February we hope to have a once a month greening event that neighbors can participate in.
Currently we are looking at the restoration and maintenance of the pocket park located along Lincoln Rd. and North Capitol street. We plan to work with DC Urban Forestry Administration to remove dead and dying trees from our tree boxes and replace them. ECA will work with the DDOE to help home owners purchase low cost rain barrels. We will partner with Casey Tree to locate home owners interested in planting a tree in their yard.
Eckington's smart growth and quality of life issues are best addressed by forming strategic partnerships. We plan to team up with a wide range of DC government agencies, area non-profits and local; businesses to reach our goals. We have a close relationship with North Capitol Main Street Inc. current host of our monthly meetings. DPW's Helping Hands program has provided tools and trash pick-up for our community clean-up projects for years. Casey Tree has done planting in Eckington and is currently offering trees for homeowners. The City Year DC originations was once based in Eckington and has continued a decade long community service footprint in our area. A new partner is the District Department of the Enviroment. We plan to work with them in support of their efforts to create a Green curriculum for the Emery Education Center for Science, Engineering, Math and Technology. DDOE, DCPS and OPEFM have been meeting for the past four months with a teaching team at Emery to create the curriculum, plan a green roof project, explore wind and solar power instalations. Emery will be joining the ranks of Riversmart Schools and is already a part of the DC School Yard Tour. This Spring Emery students will join community members in labeling Eckington storm sewer drains with this marker.
