As we mentioned in our year end wrap-up, we are hosting a planning meeting on January 23 from 7:30 – 9:00 pm at Art Enables. We would love to meet with you, discuss what has already been done, and most importantly, lay out what needs to be done in 2012. We know you have lots of good ideas and we want to move forward in 2012 with solid, tangible action-items based on community input.

EYA Homes Seeks DC Ward 5 High School Seniors for $8,000 College Scholarships

EYA today announces its 2012 college scholarship contest for District of Columbia public high school seniors living in Ward 5. This June the company will award a $2,000 annual scholarship to up to two students based on an evaluation of short essays and recommendations.

Interested students are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible. To qualify, a student must:

Be a senior at a DC Public High School
Reside in Ward 5
Have accepted admission to either a 2-year or 4-year college (by the Jun 3, 2012 application deadline)
Have a GPA that ranks in the top 30% of their class

While homebuilding is the primary thing we do, building sustainable neighborhoods is what we love. And that means more than welcoming new homeowners – it means giving back in the communities where we build. This scholarship will make a direct and positive impact on two young people and their families living in Ward 5, the site of EYA’s Chancellor’s Row townhouse neighborhood now selling in Northeast DC.

The Ward Five Council on Education will hold its regular meeting on *Tuesday,
January 17th at Lamond-Riggs Library (5401 South Dakota Ave, NE) from
6:30PM - 8PM*. *(Please note that this month we will meet in the upstairs
meeting room of the library).*

Main topics for this month’s meeting include:* (1)* a presentation from the
Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and *(2)* a
presentation/discussion regarding the College Preparation Plan Act of
2012 (introduced by Council Chairman Kwame Brown).

Update On Early Morning Shooting In Edgewood

This morning, Monday, November 14, 2011, at about 2:20, a 21 year old man was shot and killed in the 500 block of Edgewood St., NE.

Homicide detectives are working on this case. If anyone has any information about this shooting, or if anyone saw or heard anything around this time, we would like to hear from you.

DDOT Announces Solicitation of Bids for Construction of Rhode Island Avenue Pedestrian Bridge
Construction of Key Connection to Metropolitan Branch Trail to Begin Next Year

(Washington, D.C.) The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced a solicitation of bids for the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the CSX railroad tracks at the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station. The bridge links to the Metropolitan Branch Trail and will be a safe passageway for community members who currently use the Rhode Island Avenue underpass, which is narrow and dark, or who cross the active railroad tracks illegally.

Combined with last year’s completion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail, from New York Avenue to Franklin Street, the bridge will also increase access to transit and recreation for thousands of residents. The truss bridge is designed in the style of an old railroad bridge. The design is the result of unprecedented cooperation among numerous stakeholders including DDOT, WMATA, CSX, utility companies and the community. Following award of a construction contract, work could start sometime next year.

The Metropolitan Branch Trail is a multi-use trail that runs from Union to Silver Spring, linking people to jobs, schools, stores and mass transit. Three miles of the planned trail have been completed to date.

McMillan PUD Draft

The City has released the draft PUD it will be submitting for the McMillan sand filtration site. The plan illustrates how the development team plans to preserve current historic elements and construct new retail,housing and office space on the site. Hopefully, at some point, the McMillan Advisory Group (MAG) will host a meeting to allow residents to give feedback on the plan.
